Reminder: Security Best Practices

1. Delete the included sample Conservation Area from your production environment
2. Do not use smart/smart as your username/password

The sample Conservation Area that comes with SMART has an administrative user which is useful for testing and as a sandbox Conservation Area to use while learning and training others on the software. However, in a production environment the sample Conservation Area should be deleted because the default username/password of the sample Conservation Area does have some privileges that could affect your other production Conservation Areas. Features like restoring an older version (overwriting all current data) only need a single administrator from any Conservation Area to launch. Also, changing automatic system backup settings can be done in any Conservation Area by any administrator but will affect all Conservation Areas in the system.

Overview

SMART 4.0.0 is a major release that includes support for SMART Connect Server allowing users to publish data and share data through a web portal. In addition, this build includes a collection of bug fixes and new features to the Desktop version. SMART 4.0.0 is comprised of both a desktop delivery (same as previous builds) and a server delivery (SMART Connect).

The desktop version can continue to be used without a Connect Server. In this case your Conservation Area exists in the local/desktop instance only and you do not have access to any of the Connect specific features.

Alternatively, a Connect server can be configured, and the desktop version configured to communicate with this server. In this case, the desktop can upload Conservation Area data to the Connect Server and sync any modifications. (A Conservation Area can only be configured to communicate with a single Connect server.) In addition to providing a central datastore for all Conservation Area data, the Connect server provides the following Connect specific features:

Ability to configure alerts to be generated by CyberTracker devices when certain observations are made.
Ability to view alerts on a map.
Ability to upload various xml data files (patrols, independent incident,s etc.) for loading into a Conservation Area.
Ability to access Conservation Areas Queries and Reports from a web interface (this includes a UI and an API).

Installing Version 4.0.0

SMART Desktop - Installation instructions are the same as previous versions. Detailed instructions can be found here.

SMART Connect Server - There are two options for installing a Connect Server

Upgrading To SMART 4.0.0

If upgrading from 3.1.x (or prior release) to 4.0.0 users will be given the option to update their species attribute by removing any species that are not being referenced in the SMART database (by a patrol or other observation). This option will only be provided if the existing species attribute meets the following criteria: has a data model key of 'species', has more than 50 species in the database, and has more than 30% of the species that are unused. More information can be found in tickets #1118 and #1386.

If upgrading from 3.2.x or later you will not have the option for cleaning your species trees.

You can upgrade to SMART 4.0.0 from any of SMART 1.1.2, 1.1.3, 2.0.2, 3.0.0, 3.0.1, 3.0.2, 3.1.0, 3.1.1, 3.2.0, 3.2.1, 3.3.0, 3.3.1; If you have a different version of SMART you must first upgrade your database to one of these versions before you can upgrade to SMART 4.0.0.

To upgrade to SMART 4.0.0:

Backup your existing SMART database using the 'File -> Backup System' menu option.
Install SMART 4.0.0. If you are going to install it in the same location as your previous version, you must delete the previous version first. Do not merge directories.
On the login screen, select the 'Advanced' option, then the 'Restore a Backup' option. Follow the wizard, and when asked to select a backup file to restore, pick the file created in step 1 above.
A prompt will appear, warning that the backup file is not compatible with the current software version. You will be asked if you want to upgrade (and restore) - select 'Yes'. At this point the backup will be upgraded and restored.
WARNING: Upgrading a large database may take a while (10-15 minutes for a database with ~800,000 waypoints).
